The Heirs of the Heroes

Today, we are celebrating National Heroes' Day. This is our way of saying thank you (not for the long weekend) but for sacrificing their lives to free us from bondage. There are numbers of activities that are slated to commemorate this day for our great men and women. This is the perfect time to remember the heroism of Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini and the like. However, we remember who they are during this time. Sadly, majority are not familiar about the lives of these history makers. We are updated on the getaways and status of artists and online sensations we admire but we have minuet knowledge about our heroes. With this attitude, do we have the rights to be called their heirs.

Social Studies is one of my favorite subjects. My father has a great influence on me in terms of studying history which comprises the biggest part of the subject. I had the chance to know the sufferings and triumphs of Filipinos during the colonization era in our country. I can say that history allowed me to have time travel by perusing the records and documentations of the nation's rise towards independence.

But, some say that it is a boring subject. Some say it is a difficult one because of dates and names to be memorized. I can't blame them because the subject is taught in rote memorization before. Thanks that in K to 12 Education Program, the subject is taken with the application of higher order thinking skills. Hopefully, there will be a great number of Filipinos who will be appreciative and enliven the lessons they got from their history classes and not mere collectors of dates and names of people and places.

Education is the primary tool towards being called as the righteous heirs of our heroes' sacrifices. However, it should not stop in attending school. We are the future of our country. She is still ailing. She needs our actions going to the fate which is destined for her. Our heroes have lessons for us to learn to become a better nation. We should not forget these. Look around you. Are you happy with what your eyes perceive. Are you just to be listless or are you going to break the barriers and to prove to our forefathers that we are the trustees of the heritage they worked hard with their sweat and blood?

We should contribute things for our country. In simple ways we can create a better Philippines. We need to follow traffic rules regularly; abide in the implemented laws; and be honest in what we are doing. These are some simple sort of tasks that we can do. These may be ordinary activities but the effects are significant. By doing things wholeheartedly, we can be heroes that the nation is in dire need. Being heroic is not only defending our country using guns and swords but also making changes in our land.

We should be proud of who we are. We should be the people who will continue what our heroes started. We are the heirs of our heroes. We should carry the torch from the past to guide our ways towards mornings with golden rays, golden grains, and golden era.
