2017 KL Games Closes, What is Next for PH?

After three weeks of action- filled events in Kuala Lumpur Games, the biennial multisports event comes to an end. Aside from celebrating their 60th Independence Day, Malaysians have another reason to celebrate as they topped the medal tally with whooping 145 gold medals. They surpassed their 111 gold medals harvest in 2001 happened also in their country when they hosted the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. As expected, the closing ceremony went colorful with cultural performances as well as memorable.

On the other side of the coin, the Philippines suffered in this mini-Olympics in the region as the delegates were able to bring home 24 gold medals. It is far from the 50- gold medal target. Athletics delivered five gold medals that made us to join gold rush. However, there were also blank days for us that made our momentum stopped. Other sports that contributed gold are basketball, billiards, boxing and others. The newly- introduced sport, ice hockey was dominated by the Philippine team.

With this condition of our PH sports, what next for our country? We are going to host the 30th SEA Games. We know that conducting this big sport event needs a big budget. Can we shoulder the expenses? Aside from that, what are the things to be done to be able for us to go back on top and win the championship? The last time that we are in the pinnacle was in 2005 Manila Games. We were able to bag 113 gold medals. Since then, we were clinching few golds. Our sports officials should look for solutions to stop this predicament.

I am praying for the success of our country in the next SEA Games. We must believe in our athletes that they can get gold medals. We must also help our country in hosting the event. May God bless the Philippines. To all athletes and coaches, thank you for representing us. For the nation, you are all winners. Bring the gold in 2019.
